This course combines theory and hands-on practice, using a variety of example pieces to illustrate techniques. Rather than focusing on figurines or realistic forms, the emphasis will be on mastering burr shapes, their applications, and creating freeform designs. You’ll practice line weights, linear curves, and shaping, with the goal of crafting a single piece from a blank of your choice.

A significant portion of the course will introduce tools—both homemade and commercially available—ensuring you understand their uses and maintenance. We’ll delve deeply into the use of diamond paste and its critical role in achieving polished finishes.

Over two days, you’ll experience the complete carving process:

Day 1: Selecting and preparing your rough chunk, cutting, and shaping.
Day 2: Refining through sanding and polishing to achieve a stunning final piece.
This course is perfect for beginners or those looking to expand their carving skills with practical, tool-oriented instruction.

Who’s This Course For:
Meant to teach skills and techniques for those that want to invest long term into the hobby or trade.
Prerequisites:
No prerequisites are required, but prior lapidary experience will be advantageous. If you don’t have lapidary experience, a solid understanding of tool use is essential, as you’ll need to grasp burr control and sanding/polishing techniques.
